If you’re looking for an NYC wedding photographer to capture your New York elopement on film, here are my five biggest tips to help you plan a day that’s relaxed, meaningful and completely yours.
One of my favourite New York elopements started with a simple ceremony at the City Clerk’s Office.
After Joel and Victoria said their vows, we stepped out into the buzz of Lower Manhattan with absolutely no rush to be anywhere. We wandered through the streets towards the Brooklyn Bridge, stopping whenever the light looked beautiful or something caught our eye. We grabbed pancakes at a classic New York diner, jumped on the Staten Island Ferry for those incredible skyline views and finished the day sipping cocktails on a rooftop as the sun disappeared behind the skyscrapers.
There wasn’t a strict schedule. There wasn’t a room full of guests waiting for the next part of the day.
It was just the two of them, soaking up everything that makes New York feel like New York.
That’s exactly what I love about City Hall weddings. They’re never just about the ceremony. They’re about creating an experience you’ll remember forever.
So whether you’re travelling from another state or flying in from the other side of the world, here are five tips to help you plan an NYC elopement that’s every bit as unforgettable.

1. Understand the NYC City Hall wedding process
The first thing to know is that weddings take place through the New York City Clerk’s Office, not at the courthouse itself.
The process is actually pretty straightforward.
Here’s how it works:
- Apply for your marriage licence online before your trip.
- Visit the City Clerk’s Office together to collect your licence.
- Wait at least 24 hours before you can legally marry.
- Book your ceremony appointment (or join the walk-in queue if available).
If you’re travelling from abroad, I always recommend leaving a little extra time in your itinerary just in case plans change. A two or three-day stay around your ceremony usually keeps everything nice and relaxed.
I send all of my couples a planning guide before their wedding with the latest information and links, so you don’t have to spend hours trying to work it all out yourself.

2. Choose a photographer who knows New York inside out
This might sound obvious… but your photographer becomes a huge part of your wedding day.
Especially in New York.
The best photos don’t happen by accident. They happen because someone knows exactly where to go, when the light hits certain streets and how to dodge the busiest crowds.
As an NYC wedding photographer, I don’t just turn up with cameras.
I help couples:
- Find beautiful photo locations within walking distance.
- Plan a relaxed timeline around the City Clerk appointment.
- Avoid the busiest tourist spots.
- Discover quieter streets with that classic New York feel.
- Get from place to place without wasting hours in traffic.
One minute we’ll be outside City Hall, the next we’ll be wandering through Tribeca, jumping in a yellow taxi or finding the perfect little street that looks straight out of a film.
That’s the difference local knowledge makes.
And because I’m also a film photographer, you’ll come away with photographs that feel timeless, nostalgic and full of real emotion.

3. Build a timeline around experiences, not just photos
When couples first enquire, they often ask me where we’ll take photos.
The better question is…
What do you want your day to feel like?
The photographs naturally follow when you’re doing things you genuinely enjoy.
Take Joel and Victoria, for example.
We didn’t spend hours chasing landmarks or ticking locations off a list. Instead, we built their day around moments that felt like them.
That looked like:
- Walking across the Brooklyn Bridge together.
- Sharing pancakes in a cosy diner.
- Catching the Staten Island Ferry just because the views are incredible.
- Wandering through the streets without rushing.
- Finishing with rooftop cocktails overlooking Manhattan.
Every stop became part of their story.
And because we weren’t racing between locations, everything felt relaxed and natural.
Those are usually the photographs couples tell me they treasure the most years later.

4. Wear something that feels like you
One of the best things about eloping is that there aren’t many rules.
I’ve photographed everything from classic wedding dresses to tailored suits, mini dresses, trainers and leather jackets.
Wear something that makes you feel comfortable.
You’ll probably be walking quite a bit, so think about:
- Comfortable shoes (or bring a spare pair).
- Layers if you’re getting married in autumn or winter.
- A bouquet that adds colour without feeling over the top.
The more relaxed you feel, the more natural your photographs will look.

5. Remember why you’re doing this
It’s easy to fall down the Pinterest rabbit hole.
Trust me.
But the couples who enjoy their day the most usually keep things simple.
They focus on each other instead of trying to recreate someone else’s wedding.
Some celebrate with pizza.
Some head to a rooftop afterwards.
Others book a table at their favourite restaurant before watching the city lights come on.
There isn’t a right way to do an NYC elopement. That’s exactly why I love photographing them.
Your day should feel like your story, not anyone else’s.
